Stay on track: FAQs

In a word, yes. Rail travel tends to be one of the safest forms of transportation, and accidents are rare. That being said, it’s wise to consider your personal safety when you’re on board a train. Keep an eye on your belongings — particularly your passport, money, and travel documents — when you’re at busy stations to avoid pickpocketing and petty crime.

For the most part, yes — rail travel is pretty comfortable, especially when it comes to overnight or long-distance trains. They often have reclining seats, plenty of legroom, and sometimes even beds! Regional trains travelling shorter distances might be a bit more basic, though this is all part of the adventure!

Yes, all the trains we use on our rail trips have toilets on board, though they may not be the Western-style toilets you’re used to. Make sure you bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer too.

While many of the trains we travel on have power outlets, we can’t guarantee it on every single train. It’s best to pack a power bank with you.

The speed of trains really depends on where you are in the world. If you’re in Japan and riding the Shinkansen, one of the fastest trains on earth, then you can expect to reach speeds of up to 360km (223 mi) per hour. On the other hand, if you’re in Vietnam, then trains can crawl at speeds of around 50km (31 mi) per hour.

As with pretty much all of our trips, we recommend bringing a backpack or suitcase that you can easily carry and lift. Certain trains like Japan’s Shinkansen have specific size and weight limits when it comes to luggage, with penalty fares for going over. You can find specifics under the ‘What to Take’ section of your ‘Tour Details’ info.

Overnight trains tend to be clean and comfortable, with bunks catering to between four and six people depending on where you’re travelling in the world. Clean sheets and a pillow are pretty much a given, but you’re more than welcome to bring your own to be comfy. Basic washroom facilities with toilets and sinks are often in each carriage, but bring toilet paper with you just in case.

Yes, you need to have travel insurance for all of our trips. Make sure that when you buy travel insurance, it covers all the activities included on your tour.
